Opportunist

I'm not pulling any punches on this. Jeb Bush is a flat out dirty, stinking political opportunist.

Let me just digress for a second here and say that Barbara Bush ought to be the poster child for birth control.

Check this out. Look what Jebbie's been up to. I am beginning to think that the Bush family is mentally ill. They have some kind of whole-family sickness. They all seem to be infected with a terminal sense of arrogance, and certainly their ethics are in the can. From the Orlando Sentinel:

The court has ruled repeatedly that the state Constitution specifically protects the privacy rights of all Floridians. That has meant abortion rights for women and the right to die for terminally ill patients.

So the governor must wait until opportunities present themselves. When they do, he pounces, making clear his conservative credentials in the process.

He signed a bill to create a "Choose Life" license plate that his predecessor had vetoed. He signed a bill requiring doctors to notify the parents of teens seeking abortions, even though versions of the bill had been ruled unconstitutional. And he chose to intervene in an attempt to ensure a severely mentally retarded Orlando woman who was pregnant after a rape in a foster-care home did not receive an abortion.

This time, it is the gut-wrenching case of Terri Schiavo, whose feeding tube was removed on a judge's order after more than a decade of living in a persistent vegetative state. She would die within days if Bush's order to re-connect the feeding tube is overturned by the courts.

He wouldn't let a mentally retarded rape victim have an abortion? What kind of man would do that? Someone whose ethics are in the can. Someone who uses things like this to political advantage. Just as his brother George thinks it's OK to lose soldiers in Iraq in order to get oil and votes, Jeb thinks it's OK to use people who can't even think for themselves as political footballs. Which is really even worse, if you stop to think about it.

Sometimes I'm surprised I can still feel outrage -- one goes numb under the onslaught of bad news under this administration. But I feel fresh new waves of moral indignation about Jeb Bush.

Tragic Flaws

I really enjoyed what Nicholas Kristof had to say today. Check in for a few parallels skillfully drawn between "Swift-Footed W." and the Greek heroes.

"The Iliad" is the greatest war story ever told, but it's not fundamentally about war -- after all, it never mentions the Trojan horse and covers only a few weeks in a war that lasted 10 years. No, "The Iliad" is ultimately not about war but rather about how great men confront tragedy, learn moderation and become wise.

In case "The Iliad" isn't lying around the Oval Office, let me recap for our warriors in Washington. Achilles is both the mightiest warrior and a petulant, self-righteous, arrogant figure. A unilateralist, he refuses to consult with allies; he dismisses intelligence about his own vulnerability; he never reads the newspapers.
