The Pathetic Moves of A Desperate Man
These are strange days at Baylor University. First, Patrick Dennehy goes missing for a few months, only to be found beheaded in a quarry not far from Baylor's campus. His accused killer is a former teammate who Dennehy befriended and more or less looked out for, a young man named Carlton Dotson. Nobody knows for sure what happened between Dennehy and Dotson, but there are multiple sources that say that Dotson wasn't all right in the head, that he was hearing voices and such.
Now, I'm not going to say that hearing voices by definition makes you crazy, because it doesn't. What makes you crazy is when those voices aren't coming out of somebody's mouth standing within earshot of you. Then, you are crazy. Also, for good measure, if the voices tell you to shoot and behead somebody, both you and the voice are crazy.
Too bad for Patrick Dennehy. By all accounts, he was a stand-up guy.
All accounts, except for the ones made up by his former coach, Dave Bliss. Turns out Bliss, who was under investigation for illegal payments to players, thought it might be a good idea to say Dennehy was a drug dealer, and that would explain where he got the money.
Bliss then wrote scripts for other players and coaches to recite, to try to convince investigators that Dennehy was in fact a dealer. Subsequent investigations show no evidence that Dennehy was involved in dealing any drugs.
What can you say about a man who says that his plan will work, because a dead man can't refute the allegations?
I can't think of many less honorable acts. Slander is one thing, but to slander a man who is dead to save your own ass? Dave Bliss deserves to go to prison.
Or is it libel? I get them confused. Either way, Dave Bliss sucks, and he'll never coach again.
