Going Number 2
Overheard last night on NPR's New Hampshire election coverage, as I pulled into the PetCo parking lot:
"The AP is calling this race tonight with 40% of the precincts in. John Kerry was the winner, and Howard Dean went Number 2."
Or am I the only one who laughs whenever somebody mentions going Number 2?
Anyway, who knows what it all means? Kerry's in a strong position right now, but can he maintain the momentum in the South? Does Dean's money and organization have a chance to sustain him, and if it doesn't, where will that organization go if Dean is no longer in the race? Will the Dean supporters just go home for good, or do they jump on the bandwagon of the Anybody But Bush movement?
I don't think last night told us too much. With all those Independents voting in New Hampshire, who can say what any outcome means? I heard interviews with right-leaning Independents who said they were voting for whoever they wanted Bush to face. New Hampshire winners in the past include John McCain, Pat Buchanan, Paul Tsongas and not Bill Clinton.
More than anything, I'm glad I don't have to hear another goddamned thing about New Hampshire or it's cranky, self-inflated residents for another four years.
