How Much TV is Too Much TV?

I grew up watching a lot of TV.  TV was my friend, and I'm still a believer that TV has a lot of great things to offer.  But, it undeniably has a lot of filler or worse as well.  We let Linus watch TV when he gets home from school, up to an hour.  Basically, he gets an hour of TV per day, if he wants it, not including something that we decide is worth watching as a family.  (In other words, we don't penalize him for being around if we happen to be watching TV, which doesn't happen all that often.)

It's tough to know where to put the limits on TV.  The fact is, TV is often a parent's friend when you need time to get something else done and want to ensure your kids are under control.  Sure, sometimes they get that glazed, sedated look when they watch, but if they never get that look, how am I supposed to identify with them?

But how much TV is too much TV?  It's a question many parents struggle with, and until tonight I didn't have many answers.  But let me humbly suggest that when your child casually uses the phrase "each sold separately", they are probably watching too much TV.
