Deer Invasion!

I saw another large deer move through our yard this afternoon, about 20 minutes ago.  Jane and Linus and the guy across the street saw this one, too, which vindicates my earlier reported sightings.

Deer numbers are up across Minnesota, and specifically in the outlying Twin Cities area, to the point that sharpshooters are being employed to bring the population under control.  I'll say it again: I love the idea that I live in an area where I can see large animals, but there comes a point where the possibility of having a run-in with a deer becomes too high.  A deer could seriously mess me up, not to mention one of my kids.

When I was younger I didn't understand the environmental benefits of hunting, why in most cases hunting seasons are for the ultimate benefit of the animal population in question.  But now I understand that sometimes you have to thin the herd.  It's one thing for a deer to find it's way to our neighborhood every now and again.  That's charming.  When they start showing up on a regular basis, it means there are too many deer for their regular habitat to support.
