Shaved

I shaved my head last week.  Not cueball bald, but still very short.  I did it primarily because I haven't been able to come up with a hairstyle that really works, and I have this odd pattern of thinning hair that needed to be addressed.  I don't have male pattern baldness; rather, I just have very thin hair in front, such that in some light I appear to have a full head of hair, but in other light, particularly when light is shining down on top of my head, it is clear I have extremely thin hair from my bangs to the apex of my head.  I came to realize that when I see other people who have hair similar to mine, I always wonder why they don't just shave it off.  So why not take my own advice?  I had wanted to do it for awhile, but Jane was hesitant.  I'm not sure why; I'd shaved my head before.  But recently she saw the light, glaring off of my scalp, and blessed the procedure.

Funny thing, shaving your head.  If you have a shaved head when people first meet you, they never think anything of it.  If you look around you'll see lots of people with shaved heads, and most of them would look ridiculous with hair, like Jerry Tarkanian or Sgt. Slaughter.  But the reaction is quite different if people first get to know you as someone with hair and then you show up one day shaved.  Most people aren't able to hide their reactions of shock and say something like, "Why did you do that?  But it looks good, though.  Really.  Yeah."  Thankfully my boss has the same haircut I now have, so I know the high-five he gave me when he first saw it was genuine.

But, it's been a week now, and I think everybody's starting to get used to it.  Except for my kids.  I catch Linus staring at my head every once in awhile.  When I turn to look at him he turns away really fast.  I say, "Hey!  Were you just staring at my hair?"  And he'll smile and say that he was.  Then he comes over and feels it with his hand, which I admittedly do all the time as well because it's a weird feeling when you've had hair all your life.  I asked Lily if she wanted to get her hair cut like mine, and she gave me an emphatic "No!"

I'm not sure how long I'll keep this, but I'm going to give it a try for awhile.  I'm not sure why I would go back, though.  Hair only gets thinner with age, and I'm nowhere near vain enough to pursue something like hair plugs or some other treatment.  For better or worse, I think I may have found my lifelong hairstyle.  Fortuntely, as many people have remarked in the last week, I have a nicely shaped head.
