So Much For Momentum
I needed a few days of emotional separation after the Twins' loss in the playoffs, but after crowing so loudly about the team I feel obligated to acknowledge their sweep at the hands of the Oakland A's. I hardly recognized the team in the Twins uniforms in the three games; they beat themselves with sloppy play on the bases and in the field, their bullpen gave up more runs in three games than they usually do in a week, and the Twins were something like 1 for 19 with runners in scoring position. Worst of all, the Twins looked tight.
Honest, this was a very good team, but if you don't do it when it counts, it doesn't matter. They are young, and they'll be back, hopefully with a better effort. Props to the A's, and in some sense a karmic restoration may have taken place, as it was the Twins who knocked out a 103-win Oakland team in 2002.
And major props to the Detroit Tigers for taking out the hated Yankees. Let no one ever talk about momentum again; you couldn't have found a hotter team than the Twins or a colder team than the Tigers (or Cardinals) going into the playoffs, but all of that is a distant memory now.
I'm rooting for the Tigers from here on out.
