The temperature was around 18 below zero this morning when I woke up.  My kitchen has a large bank of three very energy-inefficient (old) windows above the sink and if I leave butter near the windows, in the morning it is rock hard.  The only way I can bear to be in the kitchen for any length of time is to plunge my hands into a sinkful of hot water--or to turn on the oven.

Not wanting to be entirely wasteful, when I turned on the oven this morning, I decided to make up a couple batches of dried breadcrumbs.  I'll need some this afternoon anyway when I make the meatballs for the sandwiches we'll be having for supper.

Kipp is five today.  His birthday party is tomorrow; five little guests are invited and we've plans to go sledding after lunch, but it's supposed to be a balmy 15 degrees, above zero, by tomorrow.  Let's hope so, or I'm going to have to think of a few more birthday games.
