I just spent a bit of time booking our family summer vacation.  We are a pretty lazy family in the summer, meaning we don’t have every week-end booked in advance, but I do like having something to look forward to during the month of August., which not only helps summer speed its way along, but also pretty much takes care of half of my least favorite month.

Until just recently, I never even knew the Apostle Islands existed. Whoever pays much attention to Wisconsin?  (And I can say that because I lived in Milwaukee for 7 years.) We’ll be staying on Madeline Island, the only one of the string of islands to have any sort of commercial development.  The remaining are under the protection of the National Park Service.

Lodging established, at a cottage on the north end of Madeline Island, I can now plan the activities. . .kayaking in sea caves & past shipwrecks seems to be the thing to do, along with touring the various islands and checking out some of the old lighthouses.

I'm looking forward to a change of air and am happy to have found a cottage.  What I like best about staying in self-catering places, as opposed to inns or hotels, is doing my own cooking, thereby avoiding the depression and sloth that can overwhelm me after too much restaurant food.  I think it's fun to plan and shop for just a few simple meals, even if cooking in an alien kitchen is always a bit of an obstacle course.

Back in January,  I was thinking a little self-catering place in Italy would be a fine idea for a summer vacation, but it's so much easier just to get to Wisconsin, and no jet lag.  Italy can wait.
