I did not participate in any of the three previous editions of Is My Blog Burning--fire slow to catch on here, but I have decided to participate in the next edition, with Rice as the featured comestible.  For more details see:  http://chezpim.typepad.com/blogs/2004/05/around_the_worl.html

As a child, rice was my favorite food, in the form of rice pudding. My grandmother made it especially for me--even during my grade school years, when she was the school cook.  Now, at every family pot-luck, I am required to bring the rice pudding.  It's nice not to have anything else required of me.  I always know what to make, I know how to do it, and II always have rice, milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla and cinnamon on hand.  (If I don't, I curse.)

Although I tend, nowadays, to think of rice pudding as "pure diabetes in a bowl", what's nice about bringing it to pot-luck gatherings is that no one, including myself, is allowed to eat the entire bowl.

Real Time Blogging:  The new refrigerator is being delivered as I type.  Doors are off hinges, fridge doors, kitchen doors--and it's still going to be a tight squeeze.  But I say an inch clearance is as good as a foot clearance.  Clearance is clearance, right?  At least that's what I always think when I measure.

I just thought it would be best to get myself and the dog (because the dog follows me wherever I go) out of the way and let the cursing professionals do the job.

Cleaning out the old fridge this morning, I was dismayed at all the crap I had in there.  How many sizes / shapes of pickles does a family need?  Why do I have three soy sauces when I hardly ever cook Oriental food?  (Maybe that's why.  I don't use them up.)  There were at least six bottles of salad dressing, when I prefer to whip up a vinaigrette and way too many one-recipe items--roasted red peppers and rosewater, for example, purchased because a recipe called for them and then never used again.  That seems to me a symptom of unintelligent cooking, but I will go easy on myself for now as it was all in the name of learning to cook.

I will do better by this new fridge, knowing exactly what I have, why I have it, and whether or not it is useful.  The nice thing is it will all be more clearly visible.
