The weather here has turned ugly; hot, humid and brutal.  Maybe that’s just summer to the rest of the world, but to me it’s hell.

I had another vision of hell this morning.  After the garbage truck had passed, I went outside to retrieve the trash can from the curb and return it to its spot.  Though the garbage was gone, a putrid stench remained.  I lifted the lid of the can and saw thousands of maggots swarming all over the place.  I stood there for a moment, looking down, but I don’t think I was really seeing the maggots.  I was, believe it or not, getting a surge of what I like to call “negative inspiration” in my quest for the well-tended house.

I dragged the trash can over to the hose, popped into the house for the bleach, and I hope no one calls the SPCA on me, but I doused the inside of the trash can with straight bleach and hosed the maggots down.  Then I wheeled the can over to the sewer and dumped the whole stinking, squirming lot.

I immediately picked up the phone, called K&S Interiors and told Evie, the decorator, to come on over and measure the windows.  It’s time for new blinds.  It’s just time to quite hemming and hawing and put some money and elbow grease into loving this little bungalow.

I didn’t tell Evie about the mass of maggots that had precipitated the call.
