Shifting gears, again.  I feel like I’m always shifting gears, which is fine, except I think my engine could use some oil.

Last week I recuperated.  I didn’t exercise.  I cooked.  I roasted a capon and baked gingersnaps and made a chicken pot pie.  I raked the lawn, hefting tons of leaves and brush into paper bags, while watching my neighbor vacuum individual leaves out of his rocks.  He was probably cursing me the whole time since he doesn’t even have a tree in his yard.  Those leaves in his rocks were trespassers.

Today I eased back into other physical activity.  I took a pilates class, which I haven’t done in a long while.  Though I felt tender last month, I feel fine and strong again, as if by magic.  After my class I went to visit Mae. I read her the newspaper and we talked about everything from the riots in France to the riots in South America.  She’s a pretty sharp 95-year-old, I’ll say that, although she says she has no desire to live to be 100.  I wonder if I can help her change her mind about that.

Mae’s apartment is right next to Kipp’s school. I visited with her until it was time to pick up Kipp. I’ve been looking over some Spanish teaching materials as I’ve volunteered to help out at Kipp’s school.  All they’ve had for a Spanish teacher up until now is a video program, so I think some real interaction will be good for the students.  It’s an elective class; I’ll have about 7 students and I’m looking forward to it.  Who knows what I will learn?  Anyway, it’s only for half an hour, twice a week, right at the end of the day, before I pick up Kipp.  Kipp seems to be in a state of awe about the whole arrangement.  I told him I used to be a teacher, but now that he knows I’ll be in his school, teaching the “upper graders” (grades 6,7,8), the concept finally enters more clearly onto his little radar screen.
