A Word About Mom
On February 22nd I posted a little story about visiting my mother in the psychiatric hospital. I have received many emails from online friends asking how she is doing now.
Real Live Preacher has a curious ambiguity about it. On the one hand, this blog is a very personal look into my life. On the other hand, everything is put into essays, which are less personal. Polishing brings beauty, but every gain has its loss.
I’d like to let go of my need to craft, polish, and create. I'd like to tell you about my mom. This is just me talking, the man behind Real Live Preacher.
Janell (her real name) came home after about 2 weeks. She had been having struggles with mild manic and depressive episodes for a few years. The extreme nature of her break from reality was a call to become serious about what had been happening to her.
She has found medication that works. That medication has unlocked something and we are rediscovering a person we thought we had lost. For years we’d only seen the slightly manic or slightly depressed Janell.
She and my dad came to visit last week, and it was a joy to look into her eyes and see the woman I remember. It was good to welcome her back.
For all who prayed, lit candles, left comments, and loved me from afar, thank you. You’ll never know what it meant for me to click and discover your kindness on my computer screen each night.
Love,
Me
