I had this funny picture in my head of a freak-show barker shouting, "Come, See a Real Live Preacher".

Wisdom of the Ages

Every so often someone gets it in her mind to memorize the entire New Testament. Really. And through the years a handful of weary pilgrims have managed to pull it off.

Bibles being cheap and readily available, I prefer to carry this information extra-somatically. I just slip a testament in my pocket and go about my business. You know me, always looking for a shortcut.

But some folks like a challenge, and God bless them. These days some people spend six or seven hours a day playing video games and watching television, so who will begrudge these scriptural Rasputins their own kind of fun?

Maintenance must be a bitch, though. The human mind does not want to retain that much scripture. You have to spend a lot of time polishing the edges, trying to keep Titus and Jude from fraying.

And what exactly does one do with such a large mass of specialized knowledge? I'm guessing requests for recitation are rare. Parlor tricks? Take the act on the road? I really don’t know. If we ever find ourselves in some post-holocaust world where all the bibles have been destroyed, these folks will be in high demand.

Until then they bide their time.

One thing is clear to me. You can’t know everything you’d like to know. You can’t do everything you’d like to do. You can’t read everything you’d like to read.

You must hold onto some things and let go of others. Learning to make that choice is one of the big lessons of this life.

It is the wisdom of the ages.
