I had this funny picture in my head of a freak-show barker shouting, "Come, See a Real Live Preacher".

The Anonymity Conversations
Final

Thanks everyone. You've given me a lot to think about. I'm closer to a decision. I'm getting bored with it though; maybe you are too. Here's a few final thoughts.

I think we shouldn't overestimate how well known we bloggers are in this world. By fate, fortune, luck, providence, or some combination of the above, Real Live Preacher ended up being one of the "popular blogs." I think there are no simple answers to the question of how that happened, but I DO know that it isn't because I'm the world's greatest writer or something. I don't even care how it happened. I wrote some stuff and people came to read it. I'm happy. You're happy. Good for us.

I do not think the world is going to come running to Real Live Preacher. Sometimes things like that happen, but I don't think so this time.

My book deal with Eerdmans is very modest. There are no book tours planned. There are no huge amounts of marketing money for a first time author and his little book. I'll be in their catalog, and that's no small thing, but there is no reason to think this book will make anything but a small splash.

And a small splash is WONDERFUL! My goal for the book is modest. I hope it sells well enough that someone would be interested in letting me write another one.

If I WERE to sign my name to this book, I believe that I would be in less danger of losing privacy than your average small-town newspaper columnist. I don't think people would bother me a bit. If I sign this book, it will be up to me to set my own boundaries, just as it has always been. I'm a big boy. I know how to say no.

It's very important to me to keep a good perspective on who I am, who you are, and what we are all doing in this crazy world. I'm a guy who writes things. I'm blessed to be able to write some things and put them in a book. Good for me. I deserve all the credit and love due any tinker, cobbler, or candlemaker.

You've been so kind, all of you. I cherish the love you've given to me.

Let's do life. We're going to be fine.

rlp, me
