I had this funny picture in my head of a freak-show barker shouting, "Come, See a Real Live Preacher".

Working on the book

I think I mentioned that the book will be a collection of essays from the blog, along with some new material. My editor has a tentative list of essays which I'm supposed to go over. I haven't yet. Right now I'm putting my energy into the new essays. I'd also like to finish another dramatized story from the bible. We'll see about that, though.

I don't know how you write, but I carry around a little notebook and write stuff all the time. I'm constantly starting essays, most of which I never get around to finishing. I sent Chuck about thirty essays in various stages of completion. He went through them and picked some that he thought might fit the book. I have about 12 that I'm working on right now.

It was strange letting someone see my work in progress. Even my wife doesn't see my early drafts. Some of these were nothing more than scattered notes and ideas. A couple were almost done, but I never put them online for one reason or another.

Last week I worked on an essay I've been carrying around for awhile. It's called, "I'm Sorry For What I Said About the Moon." It bucked and kicked until I gave in and let it split in two. Now there's a follow on called, "This Is What I Say About the Moon." They're both observations on relative motion, children, paganism, and Christian symbols.

I know. That seems weird to me too, but I love what was left when I was done.

I also finished up a silly little dialogue between two angels, called "Let Him Be Called Real Live Preacher." It's a goofy look at the launch of this blog. If you end up reading the book, promise me that you'll read it using the best English accent you have.

And this morning I got up early and spent about an hour and a half working on something that has no name yet. It's about TV preachers, but probably will not be what you expect.

That's where things stand. It's going to be a long month.
