Still Working on the Book
I went to one of my favorite places to write today – a bookstore in our town. This bookstore is the kind of place that Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com are driving out of business. It’s privately owned and is in a quirky old building with a lot of personality. The staff is very knowledgeable about pretty much everything. They work there out of a sense of personal calling.
The woman who runs this store is a dear friend. For a time she was the only other person in the world besides my wife who knew about Real Live Preacher. Sometimes she leaves comments here.
Upstairs near the theology section is a table where you can sit and read or write or do anything you want. Before we built our church building, back when George was still alive, I used to spend a couple of days a week studying at that table. This is a SERIOUS theology section, and students from a local seminary came and went while I worked. The upstairs part of the store is delightfully messy, so I was writing in the middle of books and students and artwork. There is an old desk up there with a lot of paperwork on it and a rack of clerical shirts. This is where I first saw the blue jean priest shirt.
I mentioned on Saturday that I'm trying to write twelve new essays for the book. I finished up my fourth essay there today. Toward the end the title became clear to me, so I called it, “I Eat TV Preachers.” It’s not a funny piece, even though the title seems humorous. It was a good day. I got good work done.
Tomorrow I’m going to write at another favorite location, an Episcopal church in town. I used to study there a lot too, back in the day. I'll be working on essay number five. This one already has a title because I started it months ago and have done a fair amount of work on it already. It's called, "Just To Sit and Cry and Not Be Bothered, and it's the story of a little church that I love in the mountains of Colorado.
I'll write until lunch and then I'm going to the hospital. Evangelina has been ill and is going under the knife tomorrow. I'm confident she'll be fine, but I'd like to go and pray with her and Pepe.
