A Prayer for Evangelina
I went to visit Evangelina in the hospital yesterday. She’s going to be okay, but her recovery has turned out to be harder than she thought it would be. I brought her three magazines and a tin of strong peppermints. I know that sounds odd, but it's exactly what she wanted, so I guess it's not odd at all.
We prayed together before I left. Evangelina, Pepe and I have been friends for a long time. We’ve prayed together in good times and in hard times. Right now is one of the hard times.
It was a heartfelt prayer between two old friends, and I thought it was a pretty good one too, until a shrill alarm alerted me to the fact that I was standing on her IV tube, completely cutting off its flow. It put a rather sudden end to the prayer, I’m afraid. One hell of an amen.
We did get a good laugh out of it, I can tell you that.
Ah well, in the name of Christ this is what we do. We come to stand with our friends when they need us, dragging our humanity in tow. The Spirit of God made known once again in our flesh. Incarnation. Good news.
Be well, Evangelina. Be strong, Pepe. Come home soon.
