Little Things Matter
Little things matter when you write. Annie Dillard once wrote in a tool shed equipped with a bunk and seagull bones. She would lie on the bunk and play with the bones until she was feeling it.
I have a friend who can only write on expensive paper with a certain kind of pen. He likes the way the pen feels scratching over the linen.
For me it’s all about keyboards. I hate the mushy keyboards that have become popular in recent years. I push on the keys, but I can't feel the bottom of the stroke. I like mine to click and clack. The sound makes me feel like something is happening. I need a quiet room and a noisy keyboard.
I buy old "clicky clacky" keyboards at Goodwill for about four dollars. I try to keep three or four on hand because they're old and tend to malfunction.
If I’m out and about, I need my Moleskine Notebook. Do you know about the Moleskine? They’re sublime. Hold one and you feel like a writer. I hate to plug Barnes and Noble, but they carry them in stock. I don’t know where else to get them. Nine bucks and you can have the notebook that Hemingway loved.
