Goodbye Rabbi Jonah
Rabbi "Jonah" died last week. I received word of his passing from a mutual friend. I wrote about Jonah and his friend "Robert" in a couple of stories from the early days of Real Live Preacher. I've had the draft of a story called "Jonah and the Soup" sitting on my computer for over a year. Maybe I'll find the inspiration to get it done.
Jonah was a complex and fascinating man. I haven't had much contact with him or with Robert since they moved to Los Angeles some years back. I had the urge to call a few weeks ago, but I did not. I wish I had. I'll call Robert sometime today to express my sadness and see how he is doing.
Jonah was involved in many things. I don't pretend to know the depth of his achievments. He had a passion to fight for the rights of people with disabilities and achieved some success and fame for his efforts. He himself was bound to a wheelchair because of a bout with Polio years ago.
He may have been the smartest man I ever met. The depth of his learning astonished me.
Goodbye Jonah.
Y'varech'cha Hashem v'yishm'recha Ya-eyr Hashem panav eilecha vichunecha Yisa Hashem panav eilecha v'yaseim l'cha shalom
May Hashem bless you and safeguard you. May Hashem illuminate His countenance for you and be gracious to you. May Hashem turn His countenance to you and establish peace for you.
