Real Live Preacher Meets Pipeline
Thursday evening I met Doug Hennessee of Pipeline in Austin for dinner and conversation. He was in town on business. It's strange, but I keep meeting people from the blog world in Austin.
Sadly, because I’m not that familiar with Austin and because we found ourselves in a newer part of the city, we had to eat at Chuy’s. The food was good, but it’s not authentic Tex-Mex cuisine. It’s "Mexican food meets Austin," which is cool, but not what I had in mind.
I did bring some authentic salsa verde from a taco stand in our town. This stuff looks like guacamole sauce, but it’s hot. VERY hot.
Doug was the MAN, putting it away like a native. I was impressed.
Food aside, we were there for the conversation. Doug and I have been emailing for a year, and I consider him to be a friend. At least as much a friend as you can be when you’ve never met in person. This friendship no longer has any such qualifications. We talked non-stop for three-and-a-half hours about all the things that matter. It was great.
I enjoy meeting people who are intelligent, passionate, and care about truth. I enjoy talking with people who wonder why we are here and who ask hard questions. Doug is that kind of person.
We are separated by vastly different worldviews. Doug is an atheist who is seeking to live well in this world. I am a Christian who has given himself to a spiritual path. And yet we are brought together by a shared passion for writing, a shared curiosity that presents as a kind of hunger for life, and a shared willingness to listen to people who see things differently from us.
Food for the soul.
Thanks Doug, and best of luck with the new job.
