It's A Book!
My baby was born today. I held her in my arms. 6 by 9 inches and 179 pages. It's a book!
The books arrived at Eerdmans from the printer on Tuesday. Normally the author would get his or her copies first, even before Eerdmans fills orders to bookstores or online book sellers. In this case, Eerdmans needed to quickly ship a couple of boxes to Viva books in San Antonio so that they would have some on hand for the book signing party this Sunday. Elizabeth, the woman who runs Viva, called me today and said the books had arrived. So I drove over there and got a couple of them. I actually held the book in my hands. It's hard to explain how exciting that was.
I love the cover. It looks nicer in my hands than looking at the little picture online. The colors are deeper and darker. I LOVE the way they arranged images in the book, using the same ones I use online. They even used the woman tending the vine and cross that is at the top of the blog. I couldn't be happier.
It's a done deal. Finished. Over.
There are two events I want to tell you about. I've mentioned them before, but perhaps one last time won't be too much.
The Book Signing This Sunday, October 3rd, I will be at Viva books in San Antonio from 3pm to 5pm. Anyone and everyone is invited, but I realize that most of you live too far away. The three sisters will be there, of course, along with Jeanene. People in my church who appeared in various essays under false names will have name tags on so you can spot them. It ought to be fun!
There will be tamales and yes, I'll sign a book if anyone asks. I decided that if anyone asks me to sign their book I'll say, "Sure, if you'll sign mine." Then I'll hand them a book, which they can sign while I sign theirs. Then I'll have this wonderful copy of RealLivePreacher.com filled with the signatures of all my friends.
For some reason that makes me feel better about the whole thing.
The Virtual Book Signing (This one might interest you) On Monday, October 4th, I'll be at Viva books for a good part of the day. A couple of techie friends from church have setup a webcam and a chat room. The webcam will not be streaming video, but still pictures that will refresh every few seconds, so you guys with dialup won't be at a disadvantage. Of course I will be wearing my denim priest shirt with the clerical collar and my weird hat. What did you think?
I don't know the hours yet - I'll post them on Sunday - but on Monday you will be able to go to www.RealLivePreacher.com and chat with me while looking at my goofy face and bizarre outfit. Should be cool. Many of you have chatted with me in the comments and by email. This is as close to "in person" that we can get.
After Monday, I think things will settle down. I've got a LOT of stuff in progress. I've not posted as often, but I'm writing more than ever.
peace,

rlp
