This, That, and the Other Thing
South Beach Diet Update I've completed phase one of the South Beach Diet. Phase one is boot camp. No carbs, no sugars, no fruits, even some limitations on vegetables. The book has a fantastic array of menus for each day during boot camp, but that would require the services of a full-time cook for the duration. We don't have one of those. We work and we have three children. If we get food on the table at ALL, it's been a good day.
I've spent the last two weeks eating various combinations of the following. Luckly I don't mind eating the same things over and over, and I convinced myself that meals are not always for pleasure anyway, certainly not during phase one!
- Salad.
- chopped sirloin patties or other low fat meats.
- Allowable vegetables. No potatoes, corn, beans, or peas. Lots of green beans and spinach.
- peanuts in small helpings.
- eggs, quiche without the crust, and sausage for breakfast.
- Green olives stuffed with jalapenos, garlic, or almonds. Three or four with some peanuts for a snack.
- Cheese - low fat if possible, but I wasn't too strict about that.
- One (1) sugar free, fat free fudgesicle at night for a treat now and again. Not every night.
I began at 193 pounds. Today, at the end of phase one, I am 185 pounds. I could begin phase two, in which I am allowed whole grain breads in moderation, beans and peas, fruit, brown rices and other good carbs, and even the occasional treat like a small bag of peanut M&M's, which is the best possible "bad food" you can indulge yourself with. Very little chocolate and mostly peanuts, which are your friends!
But Jeanene and I are going to modify the diet a bit. We still don't trust ourselves and want to go to what we are calling "phase 1.2" for a week or two. I'm going to allow myself fruit in limited amounts and low carb "breads" like sandwhich wraps. No real bread or rice yet. I'll also allow myself beans and peas. No M&Ms just yet. I'll stick with the occasional so-called fudgesicle.
The main goal is to work my way into a new lifestyle. In that lifestyle, I eat healthy foods for my meals, week in and week out. I treat myself when it is appropriate. We're actually a little afraid to rush into that, so we'll be in phase 1.2 for a little while. I'll get back to you in a week or so.
Amazon.com is Shipping! Amazon.com has been listing the estimated shipping date for RealLivePreacher.com as December. The publicist at Eerdmans told me that no one knows when or why Amazon.com starts shipping a new book. Today my mom called and her copy arrived. My dad bought one from Viva and one from Amazon.com.
I wish everyone would buy their book from Viva, a little struggling independant book store. Yeah, it will cost you a couple of bucks more, but it's for a good cause. However, some people are buying from overseas or have other reasons to use Amazon.com. Maybe that couple of bucks is important to someone on a tight budget. If you ordered a book from Amazon.com, it's coming!
Wow, there are already 23 used or resold copies of RealLivePreacher.com on sale at Amazon.com. That seems fast, but what do I know about any of this?
Prayers for Tomorrow Not all of you are the praying sort. Some of you light candles or other things. Whatever you do, do it for my dear friends Michael and Amy Main, whom I used to call Pepe and Evangelina when I was anonymous. Amy is scheduled for surgery around noon. I'll be at the hospital with her before the surgery and waiting with Michael during. This is a critical surgery, not at all safe, and we hope this may be the answer to her long-term health struggles. Michael will keep you posted at his blog, which a number of you visit, I know.
If you pray, your prayers would be appreciated.
peace,
