Visitors
I remember when I first told everyone my name, I was worried that people might show up at our church because of Real Live Preacher. I don't know why I was worried about that, but I was. Actually, I have an idea of what made me nervous, but it's the kind of stuff you talk to a therapist about. Something about meeting your alter-ego, something about worlds colliding, as George said on Seinfeld.
Well, no one showed up for a long time. Then some college people came one Sunday. Then a few other people. Then Matt from Correction. There were a few people from a church in Austin, and a young couple from San Marcos came a few Sundays. Then a guy and his wife from Austin. Then some people from Christian Century. And finally, the woman who wrote this and a friend visited a few weeks ago. She's a very funny writer. I told her I knew a good mechanic in town.
Not really that many people, if you think about it. I mean, that's all of them. And you know what? It's not a big deal at all. People come to church for all sorts of reasons. I don't talk about Real Live Preacher at church unless someone asks, and it really doesn't come up that much, which is nice.
It's been almost a year since I came out of the closet, so to speak. I do not regret the decision at all.
peace,
gordon
