I can't Keep The Children Out Of My Office
It's Thursday, July 7th, and I'm counting the days until school starts again. Only six weeks. Don't get me wrong, I like being around the three sisters, but their transportation needs and need for supervision puts a real strain on my ability to take care of my own life. I end up at the church a lot of late evenings and Saturdays during the summer.
I just sent an essay off to Christian Century. Oddly enough, it's about atomic clocks, real estate, and turtles. Somehow those are connected in my crazy mind. It should be online sometime tomorrow, assuming they are okay with it. They usually are. If they aren't, I'll post it here. Either way works.
This particular essay was more difficult than most. The creative part of me had no trouble coming up with the idea, but I ended up with a handful of great paragraphs. Getting them to work together proved to be a headache. In the end, I lost a section on stopwatches and the 100 meter dash. Cutting it out was like losing a pet. I put it in a Word file and promised that I would come back to it someday. Cross my heart.
Regarding the children and my office: This is why I can't keep them out:
That is an original 1964 GI Joe. The box is a reproduction. The Uncle Joe's Mint Balls were as wretched as they sound, but I like the can. The Iron Giant was sent to me by a reader who remembered that I gave my other one away.
The fossil I dug out of a limestone creek bed near here on an expedition with the three sisters. Yes, I am a huge Monty Python fan
Who wouldn't want to buy my book? Woody seems to like it. Yes, that is the Jesus from "Dogma." That is the wooden vial of oil from the Foy story. And that is a Cohiba cigar band at Jesus' feet. The real deal, straight from Cuba and it was good!
I don't mind the kids being in my office. They go in, close the door, and draw pictures for me. They play with the toys, but are very respectful of them and try to put them back. I always find them here and there among the books.
One way or the other, I'll be here with my quirky weird essay tomorrow.
peace,
