Today in the newspaper (in the sunny Bay Area, San Francisco USA) was the result of the senate race in Louisiana. The Democratic incumbent won in a run-off. In the article, near the end, they mentioned that, even though she was a Democrat, she voted for the president's agenda 74% of the time. Then in the last paragraph, they mentioned a comment from the challenger from the campaign, who stated that the president could better be served by electing a Republican.
Um, since when is the point of a senator to support the PRESIDENT? I thought a senator's job was to represent his/her home state at the federal level, both to influence legislation with that home state's views, and, especially for a Democrat, to help direct federal funding back to the state.
It is not the job of the senate to "serve the president". It is the job of the senate to work with the president to serve the COUNTRY.
This is part of what's wrong with the current system - that someone would think that the senate should just be a rubber-stamp for the president is absurd. This is why I'll be using much of my free time in the next two years to get George W Bush out of the White House, and someone else in. I don't yet know who that will be - I'm an independent so my options are open. All I know is that my blood runs cold whenever I think of that madman in Washington DC.
And I hope John Ashcroft is watching me right now.....
