Strom Thurmond turned 100 recently. Been in the senate for 50 years or so. That is really incredible. But what was more incredible is what Trent Lott had to say about it. His racist views really come shining through, when he talks about how this country wouldn't have so many problems if Thurmond had been elected president in 1948. You know, back when segregation was the law of the land in the south, and was the platform that ol' Strom ran on. It appalls me not so much that our elected officials should feel this way (because I'm sure there's a lot more of them that I don't even know about!), but that they should express such opinions so openly, in this day and age. He did offer an "explanation" of his speech, and how it was only meant to "honor the man that he [Thurmond] is", but he'd have to think I'm a complete idiot if he thought I didn't really know what he was saying.
I do believe everyone has the right to express their opinions, but what really gets me, is how can people keep voting for these morons? Sad as it is, I'm sure it's because many people agree with them. Sigh. It's one of the things I miss most about moving out of South Carolina last year. In South Carolina, my vote really counted. It didn't do much good, but it certainly wasn't a drop in the bucket!
On another topic, I want to congratulate Thomas H Wyman (CBS chief executive) and John Snow (nominee for US Treasury Dept) for resigning their memberships at Augusta. Maybe the snowball is on its way downhill. I understand the need for men to have their "alone time", but they shouldn't need a whole country club for that! Isn't the locker room sufficient?
