On again, off again, on again
So, the recall election is back on again. As a liberal, I've been flip-flopping. This is a legitimate law in California, but the part about how the governor can be replaced with someone receiving less votes than him (because he cannot be listed as a replacement candidate) doesn't seem fair. On the other hand, the ACLU is protesting the use of the punch card machines, after the fiasco in Florida of 2000. These same punch cards were used in the 2002 gubernatorial election, though, and the ACLU negotiated for the March deadline of removing these machines. But how could they have forseen this recall election, which does not play by the same rules as the election that they conceded the use of the machines. So, I don't think this recall should be taking place, and because of that, I'm glad that Cruz Bustamante (the current lieutenant governor) went against the Democratic party to put his name on the ballot.
And then the other shoe drops. The guy that started this whole entire mess, Darrell Issa, as of now is recommending a "no" vote on the recall. Has he suddenly seen the error of his ways? Does he suddenly realize how unfair this election is? No. He is a miser who is only trying to protect more of his own coin. Why do I say that? Because he is actually only recommending a qualified vote of "no" against the recall. See, he only thinks that the recall is fair if a Republican might win it. And since there are currently two Republicans on the ballot (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom McClintock), the Republican votes might be split. There's only one Democratic choice, and that's Bustamante. So, if one of those two Republicans doesn't drop out, he wants all the people he's been telling to vote Yes on the recall, to suddenly vote No.
So why doesn't he just succumb to the will of the people, and if they want to recall Davis in favor of Bustamante, let them? After all, that's what the recall is all about, right? The will of the people? Well, it's because Bustamante supports more taxes than Gray Davis does, to get California out of this budget mess. Yes, my friends, the emperor has now been show to have no actual clothing on.
I suggest that, if either Davis or Bustamante wins this thing, that every single penny that this recall election cost the state of California should be charged directly to Darrell Issa. Every single cotton-pickin' one.
