Some news, good and bad
This news is good (PoWs found by Marines)…
…but this news is not – an anti-US riot in Baghdad.
Now some may want to dismiss the riot, but the fact of the matter is the riot had just as many people involved as did the “liberation” celebration marked by the pulling down of the statue. Not that votes count in cases like this or that the Bush regime is inclined to listen to voters.
Finally, why is this news not surprising? How many times now have we been told that “weapons of mass destruction” have been found and then had such statements withdrawn? Could it be that the UN was right?
But the Bushies don’t care – they are now claiming “victory” vindicates them – as if anyone expected anything but the US military to prevail. The argument against this war at this time was not that the US military would lose – it was that this war would have negative repercussions for the US worldwide (both in terms of influence and safety) and domestically (am I the only one who thinks when he sees a street of yellow ribbons: “why don’t they just hang up the confederate battle flag and swastika and have done with it?”).
Our freedoms are being eroded both legally (through the "patriot act," Ashcroft and judicial appointments) and through an active campaign of intimidation and dehumanization (anti-war = terrorist, anti-Bush = traitor). Our international respect and influence has been eroded and replaced by fear and loathing. Bin Laden has been made a prophet.
Now how does military victory change any of this?
