Are these the signs of an impending apocalypse? Or just plain weird?
A long-time GOP activist is disclosed to be an agent of Red China and also discovered to have had an a long-term, on-going “improper relationship” with a former FBI agent while said agent had been “investigating” Al Gore’s fundraising operations… Gee, think she influenced the “investigation” in any way? And yet the media wants you to believe that this somehow reflects poorly on Democrats? Read about this confusing situation (but not soooo confusing as to not be able to figure out who she was screwing – both figuratively and literally) here.
Oh and remember about all the reasons why we needed to go to war with Iraq? Well, anyway at least one of them was that we would supposedly install a vibrant democracy that would be a beacon to the remainder of the Arab world. Except… I guess not: read about the Bush regime’s buyer’s remorse here.
Speaking of Iraq – where are all those WMDs? You know, the weapons of mass destruction… Never mind that once you exclude nuclear weapons – as even the Bush regime has in the case of Iraq – that the remainder of weapons in this intellectually deceitful category – chemical and biological – really aren’t all that new or nearly as dangerous as nukes – since they are subject to wind, weather, heat and rain. Such weapons are subject to degradation and most biological weapons are not only extremely difficult to weaponize but have to be directly inhaled to be effective. Sure they are nasty, but in terms of warfighting capability they don’t pack the “shock and awe” implied by the term WMD. In their crude form they are about as easy to whip up as conventional high explosives but not nearly as effective – particularly if you don’t have a means of delivery. And remember they don’t discriminate between sides. But as a bogeyman the term WMD is sure effective as a means of scaring the bejeezus out of folk who don’t know any better. So where are they? Of course returning the UN inspections team to look for them is “hardly realistic.” Why I guess we’ll never know…
Now with the world concerned that the US will plant false evidence (after all we know Iraq is guilty) there conveniently pops up a report of an “Iraqi scientist” who claims that the weapons were destroyed at the “last minute” in such a manner as to “avoid all detection”… Could this get any more bizarre? Who do they expect to believe this? After repeated misleading “breaks” in this regard (and evidence of other cases of manufactured photo-ops for the home audience here and here) and with Britain admitting there may well be no WMD my only response is “isn’t there also a bridge for sale in Brooklyn?” But wait it gets better – not only does this lone scientist have all-encompassing knowledge of the vast extent and exotic means of eliminating all trace of these weapons, he also claims to have info about ties to Syria and al Qaeda… yeah, suuuure. Does our mythical source have any other info? Maybe this mystery man is the same fellow who helped “rescue” Pvt Lynch – that is, before it was uncovered that her “rescue” – like the courageous Iraqi who made it possible - was largely a fictional construct. The Bush regime is all about the short-term. They seem to have no recognition of the damage such fabrications cause in the long-term. Or – even more cynically – they simply don’t care calculating that between their partisan dominance of the media, their roughly 25% core of true believers and the episodic nature of the rest of the US electorate’s attention that they can get away with it.
Another strange story today – the US sugar lobby is virtually holding the UN hostage because WHO (the World Health Organization) had the temerity to recommend that no more than 10% of your diet consist of sugar. What was it Gore said? The powerful or the people? But those Naderites – like Michael Moore - knew better! There was no difference between Gore and Bush – nope, nosirree, none.
Yet another bizarre entry today – starving lions somehow “escaped” the Baghdad zoo and preferentially attacked heavily armed US soldiers – who of course did their duty and shot them dead. This is one of those headlines you see and just shake you head thinking “WtF…”
And in probably the least surprising news of the day (although the timing is a bit surprising) it turns out that the US wants to set up four little “gitmos” (nickname for Guantanamo) in Iraq. Yup, “long-term access” to four military bases as part of a “long-term defence relationship” with the new Iraqi regime that should enable the US to maintain a military presence “for a long, long time.”
