I am gratified by the response my last post received and will try and address some questions it generated.

How can the Architect, Oracle or Merovingian survive the reloading of the Matrix?

It seems to me that this gives us a clue to the value of the Keymaker for Merovingian: the Keymaker allows access to the corridors behind the matrix – in other words, outside the matrix, so the programs that take refuge there during the reload are safe. Why else would the Merovingian care about the Keymaker (apart from the ability to play the musical door trick that he does on Neo)? It would seem that the Architect spends all his time there and that the Oracle has taken to venturing out only on rare occasions. Note too, that the Oracle, as an extra-matrix program, has a bodyguard (Seraph) that seems to be leaps and bounds better than the agents. Why not make such skills available to the agents?

It would seem not all the programs are destined to survive the matrix and hence they are not all on the same “side.” The agents (other than Smith, who is no longer an agent) would seem to be restricted to the matrix and hence I was not surprised to see that they view the extra-matrix programs as hostile, since such programs (like the Keymaker) threaten their very existence by facilitating the reload of the matrix. This is what I meant when I called the matrix a clockmaker’s (or clockwork)  universe – the Architect sets it in motion but he cannot control the agents or other programs that are inherent in the matrix once it is started up (or reloaded). The programs restricted to the matrix can upgrade apparently – but since they have to start over every time the matrix is reloaded it seems that the Architect, Oracle etc., have the advantage of time: hence Seraph’s fighting capabilities far outstrip the agents and are nearly equal to Neo’s.
