Killer article by Krugman today on the significance of capturing a homeless former dictator versus misleading a nation into war.

But then who cares about democracy and when we can have military and judicial spectacles conjured up for our viewing pleasure?

How much you want to bet that Bush and his Iraqi "allies" will schedule any trial during the heat of next year's election cycle? Heck, they'll probably orchestrate the conviction for 3-5 days before election day.

Just as I always maintained, a large part of this war was driven by calculations concerning domestic politics.

What was it Goering said?

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials
