The Meme Manifesto

WE, the people of the United States of America, believe that our present government has repeatedly betrayed the ideals of the founders of this nation.  As a result of political and corporate imperialism, we have never been less secure as a nation, physically, morally, economically and intellectually.  We therefore make the following demands:

  1. That the present illegitimate government be replaced by one elected by popular vote of the people and that electoral reforms be instituted to insure that such fraud is never perpetrated again; and

  1. That current policies of unilateralism be replaced by a recognition that this nation is but one member of a global community in which cooperation is necessary to the survival of all; and

  1. That immediate steps be taken toward those ends, including reinstitution of this nation’s commitment to arms reduction and nuclear non-proliferation agreements; and

  1. That this nation sign the Kyoto Accords as a first step in regaining international leadership toward environmental stewardship of this planet; and

  1. That all tax reductions enacted by the present government be immediately repealed and that policies of sound economic management, beginning with a balanced budget, be instituted; and

  1. That unfunded mandates by the federal government to the states be ended; and

  1. That the budget for the Department of Defense be cut by 33 percent, thus encouraging more efficient use of tax dollars, the resultant savings to be used for the purposes of health, education and welfare of the citizens of this nation; and

  1. That corporate contributions to political campaigns in any form be outlawed, thus returning political power to the people; and

  1. That the Constitutional separation between church and state be reinforced, ensuring that the people have freedom from religion as well as freedom of religion; and

  1. That any person who is elected or appointed to a position of public trust be required to sever any and all connections to corporate entities; and

  1. That the consolidation of media ownership be reversed so that the people of this nation can once again rely on the freedom of the press; and

  1. That the protection of the environment be made a top priority; and

  1. That this nation use its scientific and technological resources to improve the condition of all humankind rather than seeking more efficient methods of destruction.

As there were thirteen stars in the first American flag, so we commit ourselves to these thirteen principles.  We seek a second American Revolution.  Not a revolution of violence, but a revolution of peace.  This Manifesto is written by one whose family came to the New World in 1617 and whose direct ancestor wrote the words to this nation’s National Anthem.  To this document, I append my name writ large so that King George can read it without use of his spectacles.
