Wordlist of the week
As promised, albeit a week late, here is a second installment of weird and wonderful words from The Mikado. Billy Gilbert was a wordsmith of monumental genius and his ability to make excruciating rhymes bordered on the criminal.
Sunday: protoplasmal ("I can trace my ancestry back to a protoplasmal primordial atomic globule.") - Pooh-Bah
Monday: recognizances ("Liberated then on bail, on my own recognizances.) - Ko-Ko
Tuesday: roe ("When you're summoned start, like a frightened roe.") - Pitti-Sing
Wednesday: tocsin ("Though the tocsin sound ere long.") - Yum-Yum, Pish-Tush, Pitti-Sing, Nanki-Poo
Thursday: prosy ("All prosy dull society sinners, who chatter and bleat and bore..." - The Mikado
Friday: corroborative ("Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.") - Pooh-bah
Saturday: verisimilitude (see above)
Now, please don't even mention The Mikado to me for several months. I am listening to old Pepsi and Coke commercials trying to get those addictive melodies out of my head.
