Just another perfect day in paradise
Each summer, Bellingham City Club members go on a dinner cruise. This year, we made a circumnavigation of Lummi island on one of those perfect Northwest days, marred only by a pervasive haze from forest fires in BC. Our sturdy ship, the MV Island Caper.

On our way out of Bellingham Bay, we cruised by this nifty piece of maritime art, the size of which can be judged by the crew member at the starboard rail. That's a New Zealand flag at the stern and I would have no qualms about sailing across the Pacific on this beauty.

As we passed through Rosario Strait on the west side of Lummi Island, we passed the tanker British Harrier, outbound from the big Shell refinery in Anacortes. That's an 80 foot Foss tug at her stern to put things in proportion. All fuel tankers in this rather tricky strait are required to have an escort.

A friend took our photo in the golden light of evening.

The setting sun silhouettes Lummi Rocks.

Our familiar sun is rendered into a rather alien looking star by the nasty stuff from those forest fires.
