The Senate has voted in favor of an amendment blocking funding for John Poindexter's Total Information Awareness program unless specifically authorized by Congress. Now a joint committee will take up the issue. So today, aided by a link on the Electronic Frontier Foundation's site, I did something I've never done before -- I contacted my Congressman to express my displeasure with TIA and my support for the Wyden-Feinstein amendment. I'm embarrassed to admit this is the first time I've written my representative. Two things motivated my decision: TIA is an exceedingly bad idea, and EFF made it trivially easy to contact my local Congressman. You simply enter your name and address on the EFF form, then they'll append the information to a pre-written message (which you can edit if you desire), look up the address for your representative, and send an e-mail or fax. It couldn't be easier. I chose to send a fax, reasoning that politicos pay more attention to paper than e-mail. Either way, please consider using the link above to do the same and make your feelings known.
