long, but interesting

The Bush administration & the end of civil liberties

Patriot I was enacted in an atmosphere of panic, paranoia, and patriotism. Ashcroft mounted quite an offensive when he laid it out before Congress. If you dared to criticize in that hour of peril, you were by definition soft on terrorism. The press now admits that it rolled over for Patriot I; the handful of journalists who questioned its provisions got hate mail and death threats for their trouble. But it left even some Republicans thinking Ashcroft had gone too far.

local politics

well, our state government passed into law a conceal and carry bill for handguns.  i'm not sure how i feel about this...it means more guns in the general population but what will it mean for crime?  usually, crimes with guns are not carried out by law abiding citizens who go thru all the hoops to get a licensed gun.  i guess we will just have to wait and see what the effects of this new law are to all of us living here in Minnesota.

at 90mph

04.10.03

We left Minneapolis Thursday evening about 6:30.  We stopped to sleep at some wayside rest in the middle of Nebraska.  I was awake and ready to hit the road when the sun came up Friday morning.

04.11.03

Nebraska, pretty flat, pretty boring.

A change of scenery!  This is along I-25 south in Colorado.

Greg and me outside of Santa Fe NM, it was windy as heck!

Greg driving, we are still in New Mexico, heading south on I25.  I just love the mountains out the window.

More mountains in New Mexico.

04.12.03

My friends' wedding was at The Camelback Resort in Scottsdale Arizona.  It was a beautiful wedding and the weather was perfect.  We managed to sleep in a real bed in Scottsdale, Friday and Saturday nights.  The bed was nice, much better than the front seat of our rented Kia Rio.

Sunset from the rooftop of the resort.

04.13.03

We hit the road again sunday afternoon.  South on I 10 and then west on I 8 to San Diego.

I fell in love with the desert.

Sand dunes in California.

Devil's Canyon

Sunset and Guts

04.14.03

the drive along I 15 from San Diego to Las Vegas.  bleh.  SoCal traffic sucks!

6th Floor Hallway of the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV.  Vegas was overwheming.  talk about sensory overload!

The Excaliber

New York, New York

04.15.03

We headed out of Sin City, not much poorer than when we arrived.

The Virgin Mountains, AZ,NV and UT.  Very cool to drive through!

I believe we are in Utah now, but this could be Arizona (we drove thru AZ for just a little bit on our way home)

snow in Utah.

I like to drive fast!  vroooooom!

Greg all refreshed after a nice sleep in the car.

Utah is just amazingly beautiful!

We ran into a snow storm on our last summit thru the rockies.  Vail Pass at about 10,000 Feet.  It was not any fun driving up and then down the mountain thru this with our little car.  but we survived.  we just drove very slow.

04.16.03

We arrived safely back in Minneapolis around 4 pm Wednesday.  Exhausted but happy.

some stats:

total miles driven:  4341
total hours on the road: 70+
cost of the rental car: $223.11

something i heard today

on the radio...but i can't find any links about it now...

anyway, on the morning show i listen to most mornings, tommy b was reading a story that some fuckheads thought it'd be funny to call family members of men serving in iraq and stating that their son or daughter or husband was either missing in action or killed.  they claimed they were calling from the red cross.  what the fuck is wrong with people?

i found the story, Hoax Targets Military Families; Red Cross Issues Warning
