Dog Days of August
Chihuahuas are in the news this week. In Japan, plans are afoot to release a two-CD set of relaxation and exercise music, featuring the voice of a superstar chihuahua named Que-chan, who hit the big time after appearing in a TV ad for a loan firm and has now spawned a collectibles industry of epic proportions. In a New York City park, meanwhile, a chihuahua was divebombed by a specially trained hawk named Galen, employed by park officials to scare off pigeons. The falconer in charge of the pigeon-frightening program says Galen probably mistook the dog for a rat.
More generally, the Vancouver Sun is reporting an amazing surge in the popularity of tiny dogs, which make a good match for 21st-century lifestyles. They have an accessory-like quality -- sort of like tamagotchis, except they're actually alive. They also fit into handbags and carry-on luggage. Reese Witherspoon is credited with influencing this new trend.
