Friday Five (School is Hell)
1. Are you going to school this year?
Nope. I'm hatching a plan to take some music courses a few years down the road, when the baby's in school.
2. If yes. where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate?
I finished grad school last December, saying "never again." Of course now I miss it.
3. What are/were your favorite school subjects?
Most of them, really. I avoided subjects that didn't appeal to me. My favorite was, and is, poetry. Also studio art, music, and Russian history (esp. 20th century). I regret not having taken philosophy courses; they would have saved a lot of energy that's gone into (ineptly) reinventing various intellectual wheels.
4. What are/were your least favorite school subjects?
Sad to say, probably foreign languages. My sisters are both polylingual; they learn languages with ease and enjoyment. I find the process laborious and in actual conversations I'm too concerned that I'm making mistakes. Which is usually the case, since I have little to no patience with grammar.
Anthropology was a bit of a letdown; growing up, my fave book was "Kon-tiki," but the college profs said Heyerdahl's theories were no longer in vogue.
5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite?
My poetry teacher, while I was doing an MFA. Her style ran completely counter to prevailing pedagogical ideas (ideas which, btw, I generally agree with). Group discussion was minimal; she sat in a chair at the front and lectured, brilliantly and seemingly ad-lib, for the entire session.
