Right Views Clark As Dangerous
WorldNetDaily, a hangout for the lunatic fringe on the right, ran a piece by mustache-man Joseph Farah calling Wesley Clark "the most dangerous person in the presidential race." A number of sources on the other side of the political spectrum are viewing the ex-general as a serious threat in 2004, and to me that's more telling than anything we have to say about him. After all, supporters may be blinded by wishful thinking; opponents may know better than we do just how serious a problem he poses for the GOP.
It should be interesting to see how Clark's candidacy, if it takes off, revives anti-Clinton hysteria as well as right-wing hostility to the Kosovo war, seen as an "immoral" intervention in a Christian crusade against infidels. The going line seems to be that Clark is part of a vast conspiracy by the Clintonistas to propel Hillary into presidential office. In one version of this paranoid theory, Clark plans to stumble, so that she can then step forward as the true savior of the Democratic Party.
Farah also suggests that Clark is the top pick of financier George Soros, hated by the fringe right for his open-society ideology, and a frequent target of anti-Semitic slurs.
The loopier the opposition, the better for Dems, I say. Labelling Clark a "pro-abortion, pro-homosexual tax increaser" isn't likely to fly with the centrist voters Bush needs in order to get re-elected.
