Shocker!

In another startling turn of events at the Women's World Cup, Germany routed the United States 3-0. Germany scored early, and the US spent the rest of the match trying to equalize. Despite the heroics of Wambach, Parlow, Hamm et al, the team couldn't get past the German goalie, Silke Rottenberg. And as things grew messy and desperate, the Germans scored another two goals in overtime.

Next up: Sweden vs. Canada. 22:30 EST.

Apartheid in the Maternity Ward

Supervisors at a Philly-area hospital barred minority doctors, nurses and service employees from entering the room of a pregnant woman whose husband had requested that only white people be allowed to assist with his wife's delivery. The move was in violation of the hospital's own non-discrimination policy as well as the 1964 Civil Rights Act and, according to the NAACP, follows a string of complaints by African-Americans about insensitive treatment.

"It's a profoundly troubling scenario," said Nancy Berlinger, an ethicist with the Hastings Center, a bioethics research institute in Garrison, N.Y. "No one wants to accommodate a request that is grounded in racism, but at the same time you've got the interests of the mother, the fetus and the hospital staff to worry about."
I'd say it was more than "profoundly troubling." Yes, the hospital wished to avoid a delivery room fracas, but It's hard to believe that abetting bigotry against its own staff was the only option. Unreasonable requests from irate, addled or stupid husbands can't be that uncommon -- does Abington Memorial have a policy of appeasing them all?
