Friday Five

It's been awhile; I especially enjoyed this one. Check it out for yourself.

Food disliked by many but liked by me: liverwurst. Disliked by me/liked by many: my fiercest opinions seem to be provoked by dessert. I dislike anything with a graham cracker crust. I wish such a crust had never been invented. I'm also strongly against the addition of raisins to rice pudding. Famous person, attractive to many, unappealing to moi: Ah, hell, I don't know. Let's say Elvis. I was born too late for Elvis to be anything more to me than a joke.
Famous unappealing person, attractive to me: Martha Stewart. Baffling trend: Whenever pop culture comes up with something that's genuinely, honest-to-god entertaining, somebody decides to claim it on behalf of high seriousness, usually by writing scholarly papers about it or organizing a seminar. Thus, we have Buffy studies, the Tao of Bart, reams of Matrix-related pretentiousness, a detailed analysis of socialist-utopian themes in...the Smurfs. It's as though it's so goddamned rare for a TV show or movie to be even slightly original or interesting that we don't know what to do with ourselves when it happens. Why not just enjoy it? Life is boring enough as it is...
