Ooooh.......Check out this ad!

Back cover of Bitch magazine, Winter 2002 issue

I love this ad!
I was in a Borders bookstore in North Carolina over Thanksgiving weekend, perusing all the magazines when I spied this--right in the front, at a child's eye level! A well meaning clerk had turned the whole stack of Bitch magazines around backwards to save young eyes from the nasty 5-letter 'b' word. I couldn't believe it!!
Great ad though. Kudos to the advertising agency.

I'm trying to catch up on my print reading during the January lull.
The same issue featured five stories of personal transformation; one of them is "From Femme to Butch and Back Again" by Andrea Straw. The extremely condensed version of the tale is a pink ruffle young girl grows up, comes out in college and becomes a nongendered trans-identified boy-dyke named Ian. All is fine until one evening while watching Cry-Baby when Ian has an epiphany. She realized, "I didn't wanna look like Johnny Depp anymore--I wanted to look like hot little rockabilly babe Lords and date someone who looked like Johnny Depp." Ian now becomes fully femme Andrea to the confusion of many of her friends!

Being a short skirted, high-heel wearing femme myself (and absolutely loving it!), some of the revelations of her new gender hit home. She misses the immediate validation from other gays and lesbians (I can relate), and she hates the come-ons and catcalls of men on the street. But above all, I love this quote:

"Sure, I used to feel threatened and like the world might kill me if they knew I was a trans, but it was not the near-constant assault that I experience now. Being femme feels even more dangerous, even more radical, than being trans butch ever did. I've never had to have so much courage just to walk down the street or to assert myself in a queer space or a straight space."

I can relate. Just cause we don't 'look as gay' as some think we should doesn't mean we're any less of a lesbian!

An excellent read, "Game Boy", can be found today on Hugh's blog Standing Room Only. I was completely blown away. Great story, wonderful imagery.....I've been thinking about it off and on for several hours now. Vivid pictures in my head. Check it out!
Also Hugh--thanks for the warm welcome. I hope I will be able to add something to this online community. Heaven knows I've never been accused of keeping my opinions to myself or being politically correct!!

I also noticed an interesting news article today. Greg Walton reports that China is blocking access to blogging from inside their country. I take that as a clear indication that this form of expression is on the right track!

I mentioned my house bunny Martin yesterday and I've been asked for more about him. I do intend to put up an 'about me' type of link, but until then, here's a picture taken of him on one of our weekend excursions to the great outdoors of our backyard. Isn't he cute?
