Full Moon in Cancer -- 5:48 am EST

Salvador Dali, Moon (for a tarot deck)

The full moon in the sign of Cancer happens only once a year, when the sun is in the sign of Capricorn. This is a good time to assess your physical, emotional and spiritual needs; balancing home and family with work and the outside world. Where do you need to take more (or less) responsibility? Are you taking care of yourself, physically as well as emotionally? The next two weeks are the time to ask these questions and make the necessary changes.

One of the subjects that has interested me since I was a child is astrology. It began the summer I stayed at my grandmother’s house and found her copy of American Astrologer magazine. I was 13 and searching for what my life would become. She enjoyed my curiosity and explained the little bit she knew about the signs and the planets. We found out we were both Geminis, discussed the feelings we had in common, and built a close bond that lasts to this day. I was hooked.

Many of my friends have a hard time reconciling my interest in astrology with the pragmatic scientific side that I show the world. But, what passes as ‘astrology’ in popular culture–your daily horoscope–is not real astrology. It’s like reading the two sentence review of a film instead of actually viewing it, very general and not very useful!

I am planning to mark some of the larger astrological occurrences here. Hopefully they’ll spark your interest in finding out a little bit more about the real workings of astrology.

I have been known to be a sucker for personality tests. This one says that I’m a Skydiver, with a sub-type of Seeker. Here is some of what it says:

“You’re open minded, extroverted, free-spirited, and independent. Chances are you’re pretty liberal. And, thanks to that healthy dose of self-confidence, you’re super-flexible. You’re a great leader, a self-starter, and will always volunteer to take on a job. You’re an excellent communicator and tend to spread your enthusiasm to others.”

Hmmmm.......Too bad I can’t date myself. They made me sound outstanding! I guess I'll have to poll my friends and co-workers to see if it's accurate. I do know that I volunteer for way too many things--gets me in trouble all the time!

The web site states that the test was built by a team of PhD's from Yale, Duke, and Northeastern. The mini report is free. I bet they say wonderful things to everyone!
Thanks to Charly at Driver 8 for pointing me to this.

All's quiet again!

I am so glad that the shuttle has launched safely and things can return to normal. The last week here in the Cocoa Beach area was like living in a military state. The beach area has been crawling with police and uniformed personnel with rifles! Hotel guests at the Hilton and several other hotels were frisked and sniffed by police dogs. Not a nice way to treat your guests!

I just came across this story, “The Stupidest Thing I've Ever Done Was Dance With The Hair Devil”, by Doug at Pipeline. He posted it on Thursday, so you’ll have to scroll down to find it, but it is absolutely hilarious!

Science Stuff
Here’s some of my favorite science stories of the past week that you may have missed:

First physicists seem to have proven one of Einstein’s theories, that the speed of gravity was equal to the speed of light, now other physicists are saying the results are wrong. I love it when scientists fight!
I'm not a physicist, but it seems to me that the speed of gravity has to be the same as the speed of light–it makes simple, logical sense. And I think when we learn how to travel faster than light, we’ll travel into another dimension. But will we have a return ticket?
(Remember, I already said I'm not a physicist!)

At the San Francisco zoo 6 penguins who arrived from Sea World in Ohio somehow convinced the 46 residents to take up the traditional migration to South America. Unfortunately the pool at Penguin Island is not the coast of South America, so all 52 penguins continuously circle the pool from sunrise till dusk. They have been doing it everyday since Christmas Eve and the baffled (and dizzy) zoo keepers don’t know how to stop them!
