My photo doesn't quite convey the composition of this piece--the lighting was bad (sorry!). The heart is woven out of barbed wire (yes, it will cut you!). The ribs of the bottom of the heart-shaped 'basket' fan out of the tail of the snake and then feed back into the neck and head. The snake is wrapped in slightly transparent heart print shiny fabric. The snake is also eyeless (blind) with a rose in its open mouth. I love the juxtaposition of sharp/soft, heart & rose/snake. Love is not only blind, it is dangerous, exciting, and will hurt!
John frequently uses barbed wire in his creations. Viewers cannot resist touching. I sat at a show with him once and laughed as one person after another ignored the warning signs and touched the barbs, only to recoil with an “ouch!” Reminds me of love. We can’t resist it, can we?
