The other scary news story
The details of SARS, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, a.k.a. the Martian flu) are scary. To date, it has killed 55 people including the World Health Organization doctor who first identified this mystery illness. At the present time, the only way to stop the spread of this disease is a complete quarantine of every person who has had close contact with someone who is infected. That is not an easy thing to accomplish
in our mobile society. Thursday, Hong Kong closed schools for 1 million students and imposed a quarantine
on more than a thousand residents.
I wonder what would have happened if the original outbreak would have been in the U.S.? It is not hard to imagine that it would have been perceived as a terrorist attack, and also not hard to imagine our government would have retaliated. And in their defense, they would have had 'evidence'.
