Spied Queer Eye & walked my peaches off
I am back from an exhausting but exhilarating trip to the Atlanta Gift Show. If you have not been to one of these large trade shows, it is hard to comprehend just how big it is. The Atlanta shows (the traditional and the new guerilla- marketed one) encompassed four large downtown buildings. The organizers claim that over 7000 vendors were there, and I believe it. I walked for miles! However, since all that walking fueled my appetite, and great smelling, high carb food was everywhere in downtown Atlanta, the trip had a net poundage gain for me. (sigh!) Sometimes I feel that I just can’t win. However, the good news is that I did find some vendors that fit my criterion of sassy, artsy, women-centered pieces. Things are beginning to come together. (hurray!!)

On Saturday, Thom Filicia and Ted Allen from Queer Eye held a seminar. Actually, it was more of a performance–they had us laughing for almost two hours. I did get answers to the Queer Eye questions that have been bugging me: how long do they actually work on the guy’s apartment (24 hours a day for two and a half days), and how many people work on the redecorating project (Thom has a crew of ten). Also interesting was the fact that The Fab Five do not meet their make-over candidate until the cameras are rolling (the reaction that we see is the real one), and that the camera makes the ‘before’ image look better than it actually is (one guy hadn’t cleaned his apartment in three years, another apartment caused several of the crew members to wear face masks). Both Thom and Ted are cuter in person than on television, and Thom is much more talkative; at times it was difficult for Ted to get a word in. I was personally surprised at the straight audience’s depth of show knowledge; they knew the names and details of every show participant. I am a faithful watcher, but I would have lost this trivia game!

I so enjoyed the time listening to them. Hey Fab Five--If you guys ever want to do a lesbian make over, I volunteer! I would love to spend a couple days getting advice from you!

Still in the Queer Eye mood, I checked out the Quizilla “Which Member from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is your type?”. Ignoring the fact that it was talking about a guy, I scored with Carson: “You look for a man (okay, I substitute ‘woman’) with class and style, a fun outgoing personality with an interest in modern culture”. I do have to admit that I won’t leave the room during Carson’s segments. I love the way he mixes couture and vintage. I even wore a necktie as a belt after he did it on the show!
