Let me be a fly on the wall....
It is very hard to write with the convention pre-news hoo-ha in the background.
Just when I think the commentary is going a bit slow and I start putting a thought
together, something else on the screen catches my attention! I have decided
though, that sometime in my life I would like to attend a convention–in
any capacity (let me be a floor sweeper!), I just want to experience
the whole thing. If it looks this frenzied and crazy on television, it must
be a real trip to be there.
Buying is so much fun!
I placed four more orders today for 2
Grrlz. One of the orders included this table:

I am having way too much fun getting the merchandise together
for the site. I can buy things I love even if they don’t go with the rest
of my stuff! It’s heaven!
An essential experience
I hate to admit it, but last night in-between the good bits of the DNC, I was
sucked into FOX’s newest reality show that made housemates of 4 Amish
and 6 metro twenty-somethings. In my defense, part of the draw for me was because
I grew up in Ohio Amish county and have a bit more than the average knowledge
of their beliefs and lifestyle. And although I think it would have been better
to put the city kids in the Amish community, there were moments that were worth
watching. In one part, the city kids had to dress in traditional Amish clothes
and go out on the town; which made several of them comment on what it must have
been like to grow up as an outsider. This is what I wish on all our young people.
That they can understand (even just a little bit) what it feels like to be a
non-WASP in the world we have created. For me, that moment came on a trip to
Columbia when I was 16. Seeing how people outside of my privileged (and sometimes
quite selfish) lifestyle actually lived, was an important moment in my maturation.
Witnessing women washing clothes in a muddy ditch beside the road jelled my
fledgling feelings that all persons were equal and deserved equal opportunities
in our world. But also, it created in me an appreciation of the simple things
in life. This is what I wish everyone could experience while they are still
young (and impressionable). If all American youth could connect with the world
experience at large, wouldn’t we have a better society?
