Discussing The Big O
Lately there has been a rash of studies on female orgasm. In May, Elizabeth Lloyd’s
book The
Case of the Female Orgasm took the literary world by storm. In it, Lloyd
scrutinized current theories and concluded that female orgasm is a happy accident
caused by the fact that both male and female genitalia. arise from the same early
embryonic tissue. Then, just two weeks ago, a twin-study
reported that heredity plays a larger part in a woman’s ability to achieve
orgasm than upbringing, culture or their partner’s bedroom skills.
And now, the University of Groningen (Netherlands), reports that brain scans
can detect which orgasms in women are faked and which are real, even when the
scientists observing the women were unable to tell one from the other. In the
brain scans, the real orgasms lit up an area of the brain that is under subconscious
control, while the faked orgasms activated the motor cortex, a conscious part
of the brain. Furthermore, with genuine orgasm, the scientists noted a deactivation
of the parts of the brain involved with fear.
“With genuine orgasm", Professor Gert Holstegehe explained, "what
we see is an extreme deactivation of large portions of the brain and especially
the emotional parts involved with fear....the movements that we make in [real]
orgasm are not conscious...if [the woman] is fearful, it is very hard to have
sex. It's very hard to let go." Furthermore, he said this was useful
information for her partner to know. "When you want to make love to a
woman, you must give her the feeling of being protected." (more...)
Personally, I’m not surprised that orgasm activates the subconscious
part of the brain....that is the out-of-this-world feeling that makes the real
world disappear. However, I’m not convinced that women need to feel protected...sometimes
just the opposite will do it for me–a bit of thrill, danger, or stepping
outside of my comfort zone. How about you?
