What’s up with this?

My copy of Girlfriends magazine arrived in the mail this past
weekend, and I was extremely surprised by the cover–and not in a good
way! This magazine with the tagline ‘on lesbian lifestyle’ seems
to be completely out of touch with the lesbians that I know. What are they pushing
as the lesbian lifestyle–anorexia or addiction? And even though I personally
find slender women very attractive, this poor stick of a thing looks like a
freak to me and not at all sexual. Is this ‘the look’ that we are
supposed to strive toward–or what we are supposed to find attractive?
I think she might scare me straight!! And what is Girlfriends saying with this
‘work’ theme issue....that this is the way we should look (or dress)
for work? OMG!! Going past the cover, I tried to give them the benefit of the
doubt, figuring there was a good reason that they chose this photo. But on further
inspection, the article that this photo leads into is about a straight clothing
designer, represented by a straight model. I don’t see why this was the
lead article for the magazine...couldn’t they find any lesbian businesswomen
for the cover of their work issue?

Compare that to the cover of their other magazine, On Our Backs, which features
attractive (even famous) lesbians. Same company...different emphasis. This cover
is sexy, and makes me want to read what's inside. By the way, if you don’t
read OOB, check it out–it’s an exceptional magazine that celebrates
the sexuality of all lesbian body types.
